Essential care after a facial treatment

Jul 24, 2026 Ericka Morales

A professional facial doesn't end when you leave the spa. In fact, the next 24 to 72 hours are crucial for your skin to recover properly and for you to fully enjoy the results.

After a deep cleansing, intensive hydration, or any facial treatment, the skin may be more receptive and, in some cases, slightly sensitive. Following an appropriate skincare routine helps to prolong the benefits, strengthen the skin barrier, and maintain healthy, glowing skin for longer. That's why I always recommend:

1. Keep your skin well hydrated

Hydration is one of the most important factors during skin recovery. Use the products recommended by your specialist to help restore the skin barrier and maintain its natural balance. Properly hydrated skin looks more radiant, elastic, and promotes faster recovery.

2. Protect your skin from the sun every day

After many facial treatments, the skin can be more sensitive to sun exposure. Applying broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher every morning helps to:

  • Protect the skin from UV rays.
  • Reduce the risk of blemishes.
  • Preserve treatment results.
  • Prevent premature aging.

Remember to reapply it throughout the day if you stay outdoors.

3. Avoid products that may irritate the skin

During the first few days, it is advisable to discontinue, unless professionally indicated, the use of products that may sensitize the skin, such as:

  • Physical or chemical exfoliants.
  • Retinol or vitamin A derivatives.
  • Exfoliating acids (AHA, BHA).
  • Products with high concentrations of alcohol or fragrances.

Allowing the skin to complete its natural recovery process reduces the risk of irritation and promotes better results.

4. Do not manipulate your skin

It's normal for some sensitivity to appear after certain treatments or for some impurities to come to the surface. Avoid constantly touching your face, scratching your skin, or trying to extract imperfections on your own, as this can cause irritation, inflammation, or leave unnecessary marks.

5. Maintain a simple skincare routine

During the first few days, less is more. A basic routine is usually sufficient:

  • Gentle cleansing.
  • Moisturizer suitable for your skin type.
  • Sunscreen.

Incorporating too many new products can disrupt the recovery process.

6. Maintain good hydration from within

Drinking enough water promotes skin balance and helps maintain a healthy appearance. Although hydration doesn't replace topical products, it does complement comprehensive skin care.

7. Always follow your professional's recommendations

Every skin has different needs and every treatment requires specific care. Therefore, your specialist's personalized instructions should always take priority over any general recommendation. Following the appropriate care plan is the best way to maintain results and protect your skin's health.

Remember

A facial treatment is an investment in your skin's health. Aftercare is an essential part of the process and makes the difference between a temporary result and healthy, radiant, and well-cared-for skin in the long term.
